Hanwha Vision (Wisenet): RTSP URL and website streaming

On Hanwha Vision (formerly Samsung Techwin) Wisenet cameras you pick a stream by its video profile number. Here is the URL format, how to find the right profile, how to create a user and what to switch off for streaming.

The RTSP URL format

On a Wisenet camera every stream is a video profile with its own codec, resolution and bitrate. The URL refers to the profile's number in the list. Often profile 1 is MJPEG, 2 is H.264 and 3 is H.265, but this varies by model and firmware — check the number in the profile list.

rtsp://user:password@203.0.113.10:554/profile2/media.smp # profile 2
rtsp://user:password@203.0.113.10:554/profile3/media.smp # profile 3
rtsp://user:password@203.0.113.10:554/0/profile2/media.smp # multi-channel camera, channel 1
What you needPath
H.264 profile (main stream)/profile2/media.smp — or the number of your H.264 profile
Light profile (sub stream)/profileN/media.smp, where N is a low-resolution H.264 profile
Multi-channel camera, channel 2/1/profile2/media.smp (channels count from 0)

RTSP port and video profiles

In the Wisenet web interface open the settings (gear icon). RTSP is on by default; the port is on Basic → IP & Port, field RTSP port (554). The profile list is Basic → Video profile. Menu names differ slightly between series (X, Q, P, older Samsung). Forward only the RTSP port on the router — see port forwarding; the web interface (80, 443) must not be open to the internet.

A view-only user

  1. Basic → User → add a new user (not admin).
  2. Keep only video viewing rights (access to the video profile); untick PTZ, audio and alarm output.
  3. If Guest access is on, turn it off — it lets anyone view without a password.
  4. Set a strong password and use this user in our form.

Encoder settings for the web

In Basic → Video profile, pick or create a dedicated H.264 profile for streaming, so you leave the recorder's or VMS's profile alone.

Common pitfalls

  • WiseStream. Hanwha's bitrate-saving technology varies quality by scene and, with Dynamic GOP, makes I-frames rare. In a browser that means slow start-up and broken frames — turn it off for streaming.
  • Wrong profile number. If the path points at an MJPEG profile, the test reports an unsupported codec. Check the list and pick an H.264 profile.
  • H.265. We detect an H.265 profile and convert to H.264 while someone watches, but an H.264 profile is simpler. See H.265 in the browser.
  • Lock-out. After several wrong passwords the camera blocks logins for a while. On an auth error, check the details first.
  • Wisenet NVR. Recorder RTSP formats differ between series. If the camera is only reachable through the recorder, look up the exact path in the NVR manual or call us. General advice: NVR and DVR.
  • Password and firmware. Special characters in the password are fine in our form. Update firmware from Hanwha Vision's official site.

Adding the camera to VIDEOCAMERA LIVE

  1. Create an account or log in and click Add camera.
  2. Fill in a name, an optional location, RTSP host, port, username, password and the path, e.g. /profile2/media.smp. In the sub-stream field, the path of a light H.264 profile.
  3. Click Test connection — our server connects to the camera itself and reports success, auth error, unreachable, wrong path, unsupported codec or timeout.
  4. Once it succeeds, activate the camera and copy the embed code — see embedding a camera on a website.
What is the Wisenet RTSP URL?

rtsp://user:password@IP:554/profileN/media.smp, where N is the video profile number, e.g. /profile2/media.smp.

How do I know which profile is H.264?

Open Basic → Video profile: each profile in the list has a number and a codec. Put the H.264 profile's number in the path.

Will it work on an older Samsung camera?

Often, yes — many Samsung Techwin cameras use the same profileN/media.smp format. If the test reports a wrong path, call us.

Do I have to turn WiseStream off?

On the streaming profile, yes. You can keep it on another profile for recording if the camera allows it.
